Super Seal™ Questions and Answers

Q. Who developed Super Seal™?

Super Seal™ was co-developed with Charles F. Cox, DMD. Dr. Cox is a professor of Dentistry and has conducted extensive research at universities in Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, and Biomaterials. He has authored over 300 publications and abstracts in the area of dentin, pulp biology, and dental materials and presented his research data at US and international dental meetings since the early 1970's.

Q. Is Super Seal™ FDA approved?

Super Seal™ holds an approved 510(k) application since 1998. (The 510(k) application is currently being amended to include its re-wetting benefits.)

Q. How does Super Seal™ work?

Dentin, enamel and cementum of the tooth are each composed of high concentrations of calcium hydroxyapatite, which is alkaline in pH. Super Seal™ and calcium hydroxyapatite react with each other, leaving a fine granular precipitate within the dentinal tubules and on the surfaces of the vital dentin, enamel and cementum. This precipitate is biologically bound to the vital dental substrate, leading to a long-lasting seal. Being water-based, Super Seal™ also re-wets the substrate to re-establish the collagen for bonding.

Q. How is Super Seal™ different from other desensitizers currently on the market?

Most other products currently being used contain Glutaraldehyde, HEMA, or BAC. Super Seal™ is water-based making it biologically compatible to soft tissue. Super Seal™ chemically reacts with the tooth structure to promote a long lasting biological seal. Super Seal™ contains no toxic substances that can irritate vital tissues.

Q. When should Super Seal™ be used?

For patients with thermal tooth sensitivity. Before and after prophylaxis and bleaching; on any exposed root surface; following periodontal surgery to occlude dentinal tubules; under restorations, amalgams, composites, crowns, inlays, onlays, or veneers. It prevents patient sensitivity during crown temporization; it does not build up film thickness. Because Super Seal™ is a water-based product, it can also be used as a re-wetting agent.

Q. Can Super Seal™ be used in several coats to seal the tubules?

Super Seal™ chemically chelates with the calcium of the mineral of the tooth substrate (enamel, dentin and cementum). It does not keep building upon itself to form a thicker layer. Consequently, it has been clinically proven to effectively decrease hypersensitivity on those tougher clinical cases when used multiple times.

Q. What is the cost of Super Seal™

SUPER SEAL ™ is a superior product at an affordable price!

Name Cost/mL Cost/application Composition
Gluma® $16.72 $1.00 Glutaraldehyde/HEMA
Seal & Protect® $18.52 $2.00 Resin-based
Super Seal™ $10.00 50 cents Refined Oxalate system

Gluma® is a trademark of Heraeus Kulzer • Seal & Protect® is a trademark of Dentsply/Caulk

Q. Is there a decrease in bond strength when Super Seal™ is used with today's adhesive systems

No. It has been clinically proven to achieve consistent bond strengths. Studies have shown that with bonding systems etching is required before applying Super Seal™. Etching is not required for general root sensitivity.

Q. How many applications can I expect from a bottle of Super Seal™?

An 8-mL bottle contains enough Super Seal™ for up to 150-170 applications. The 4-mL bottle contains enough Super Seal™ for up to 70-90 applications. Ultimately, the number of applications per bottle will vary upon the size of the area to be treated.

Q. What is the shelf life of Super Seal™

When stored under normal office conditions, the expiration date of Super Seal™ is two years from the date of manufacture. The expiration date appears prominently on the Super Seal™ box and dropper bottle. Do not refrigerate.

Q. I have a patient whose teeth are extremely sensitive to cold. Can I warm the bottle

of Super Seal™ before the application?

Yes. It IS advisable to warm the bottle slightly above the body temperature of approximately 100ºF. This will not interfere with the efficacy.

Q. What effect does Super Seal™ have at the time of periodontal surgery?

Super Seal™ has a unique chemical action to form a biologically acceptable complex that is clinically found to have no inhibition of soft tissue or PDL healing. Super Seal™ forms a layer that allows tissue recognition for healing without patient sensitivity.

Q. Is light curing or rinsing required?

No. Super Seal™ is fast and easy to apply. Just one application on a cotton pellet and gentle air-drying should provide immediate patient relief.

Q. Is Super Seal™ being used by any leading clinicians?

Yes. It is currently being used with great success by many leading clinicians including: Dr. George

Freedman, DDS.; Dr. William G. Dickerson, DDS. (Las Vegas Institute),; Dr. Arthur Tomaro, DDS.; Dr. Ronald D. Jackson, DDS.; Dr. Robert Nixon, DDS.; Dr. David S. Hornbrook DDS. and Dr. Michael Koczarski, DDS. (University of the Pacific, /The Hornbrook Group ),; Dr. Norman Feigenbaum, DDS.;

Dr. Marvin Fier, DDS.; Dr. Jeff Brucia, DDS.; Dr. Robert Margeas, DDS.; Dr. R. William Mopper, DDS., MS.; and Dr. William C. Strupp Jr. DDS, publisher of the Crown and Bridge Update.
